Things are looking swimmingly for former Charleston girl, Sierra Ferrell signed in 2019 to Rounder Records. Ferrell, who once fronted festival favorite, Charleston band 600 Lbs of Sin, has been in recent years creating her own fresh parlor country cabaret sound like the musical lovechild of Loretta Lynn and Django Reinhardt.
She toured in February with Trampled by Turtles before flying to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic where she played the sold out Avetts On The Beach festival that runs Feb. 27 through March 1 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
Playing that popular fest is no accident as Ferrell is now managed by the Dolphus Ramseur, the North Carolina music man who found, developed and still manages the famous Avett Brothers, who played WVU’s Coliseum in the fall. Ramseur, who’s rolled through West Virginia many times with the Avetts (including early stops at the V Club and 123 Pleasant Street) called Ferrell’s a voice that “encompasses West Virginia.”
“When she sings, it’s impossible not to listen and envision the beautiful mountains and luscious valleys of that wild and wonderful state,” Ramseur said when Ferrell announced her signing to Rounder as well as booking by Nashville’s veteran Keith Levy at Paradigm Talent Agency. “Listen closely and you’ll hear the roaring rivers and haunting hollers of wild creatures and timeless characters. If you are within earshot of Sierra, her singing commands and dares you to listen.”
Levy added “We were blown away by Sierra from the moment we met her – her once-in-a-generation voice, but also the feeling that when you are with her, truly anything can happen. We are super excited to be working with Sierra. It will be a wild ride!”
Spring Shows in the Region
Indeed it will be that guaranteed. If you’re a Mountain State festival or music venue, I’d go ahead and book a show now as she could well be one of the next big things to roll out of Music City via West Virginia.
While Ferrell played Nelsonville Music Festival last year (just an hour and change north of Huntington), the only spring dates in the region are April 24, at Merlefest in North Carolina and May 15, in Covington, Ky. Keep up with Ferrell at https://www.sierraferrellmusic.com/
