POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. – After some timely late May and early June rains, the tropical summer sun is on broil and that means somewhere out there in these beautiful hills of West Virginia, it’s prime ripe time for berry pickin’ season.
The family-owned Cook Farm, 7852 Ripley Road, just a few miles north of Point Pleasant, is in the heart of its Pick Your Own strawberry season that started in May and that runs through June. The cost is $2.50 per pound. There’s about a dozen varieties and you’re encouraged to sample a couple to find which berry is that Goldilocks perfect berry for you.
Barring flood or natural disaster, this is an absolute banner year and boy does this family farm deserve it. In the fall of 2018, the Cook fam was taking a much needed vacation when cows got loose and ate some 13,000 plants down to the nub, destroying the harvest for 2019, according to an article in the Point Pleasant Register. We all know what a dumpster fire year 2020 was and indeed Covid put a pinch on the Pick Your Own season as many folks stayed home to minimize risk of Covid. So a regular run of the mill year like this year is a great year. You can call or text 304-812-2888 for more info, and go online at www.cookfarmwv.com or check out their Facebook page. Note that it can only take a matter of feet of picking a row to fill up a container.
Also, if you are in the neighborhood, Martin Schaffer’s beautiful hilltop Four Seasons Farm, 8781 Evans Road (Route 87) in Leon, has a pick your own blueberries season as well. You can find out more info about Four Seasons Farm on its Facebook page.

If you do visit Cook Farm or Four Seasons Farm, trust us, you’ll probably want to top off your trip to one of those farms with a stop in historic, downtown Point Pleasant.
