Marshall Artists Series Pops With A Sizzling Spring Semester

 The Marshall Artists Series is roaring into the new year of 2023 with a dazzling array of Broadway shows, dance, music and film.

Coming soon to the stage of the majestic Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center in downtown Huntingtin is the world-famous Chicago street dancers, a tribute to Aretha Franklin,  a Celtic-themed Mountain Stage, a couple majestic nights at the movies that include a film festival and a screening of Elton John’s “Rocketman” complete with a live orchestra. And last but not least, a visit by the Grammy-Award-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band.

Here’s a look at the wild and wonderful assortment of incoming shows now on sale.

The Marshall Artists Series accepts all major credit cards. Tickets may be ordered via telephone by calling the box office at 304-696-6656. Tickets can also be ordered using Ticketmaster.com. The Marshall Artists Series box office is located in the Joan C. Edwards Playhouse on Fifth Avenue across from Marshall University’s Student Center. Box office hours are noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago 

Celebrating its 45th year, the Hubbard Street Dance team leaps onto the stage of the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.  Thursday, Feb. 9 with fresh and bold new works by choreographers Amy Hall Garner, Kyle Abraham, Spenser Theberge, Ohad Nahari and Asure Barton. Hubbard Street has been one of the most original forces in contemporary dance – bringing top choreographers to Chicago and beyond. Tickets are $113.78, $98.42, $87.45 and $76.49.

WV’s Own Lady D (a WV Black History Month celebration) 

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023. The night begins with a preview of her documentary “Those Who Come Before,” celebrating the history and culture of black music in WV featuring Bob Thompson, Crystal Good, Aristotle Jones, Rodney Boyden, and W.I “Bill” Hairston. At 7:30 p.m., Lady D will heat up the night as she belts out the blues with her band Mi$$ion. Doris Fields a.k.a. Lady D was born in Cabin Creek, WV. She is known as “WV’s First Lady of Soul” and was the winner of the national competition for the best Obama Inaugural Song in 2008 and performed it at the Obama for Change Inaugural Ball in Washington. DC. Tickets are $49.07, $43.58 and $32.62.

GRAMMY® Award-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band  

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. The 12-piece powerhouse band led by husband/wife duo Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. The Grammy Award-winning blues rock band sells out wherever they play and has “created some of their generation’s best roots-rock music” (NPR). Tickets are $109.39 / $98.42 / $87.45 / $76.49.

Regional Reels 

Come and watch a day of regionally-made films in the majestic, grand movie palace that is the Keith-Albee. This one-day film festival showcases some new and also award-winning films on Saturday, March 4. Featured films include “Peerless City,” “Picture Proof,” “The Wake-Up Call,” and “The Good Fight.”

Debuted at the Boston Film Festival, “The Wake Up Call, “ by award-winning documentary filmmakers Alison Gilkey and Eric Neudel, shows the life of the late, West Virginia native prosthetics pioneer, Dave Evans, a renowned prosthetist, humanitarian and peace activist. A double amputee himself, he dedicated his post-military career to transforming lives shattered by war. From Syrian refugees in a prosthetics clinic in Amman, Jordan, to the fallout of war in places like Iraq, Dave chose a life of service to others.

Mountain Stage 

At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 26, Mountain Stage stops by with a special Irish-themed evening featuring Ireland’s own The High Kings on a new US Tour. Other acts include folk legend Tom Paxton, The Don Juans, and others TBA with new host, WV native and Grammy winner, Kathy Mattea. Other artists to be announced.  Celebrate the 40th anniversary season of Mountain Stage, which is produced by WV Public Broadcasting and distributed by NPR Music, each episode of Mountain Stage can be heard every week on nearly 300 stations across America, and around the world via NPR Music and mountainstage.org. Tickets are $54.55 and $43.58.

“Rocketman” 

Experience the Oscar-winning musical film about the life of iconic musician Sir Elton John live in concert with a 60-piece orchestra performing its unforgettable soundtrack live to picture at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31. The film will be shown on the Keith-Albee’s giant screen, while the orchestra brings to life the stunning soundtrack – the legendary music of Sir Elton John. Tickets are $98.42, $87.45 and $76.49.
