Madame Butterfly

Friday, February 7th

7:30 p.m. at the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center

For over a century, Madame Butterfly has survived the test of time, being the most performed opera in the USA and one of the top five in the rest of the world. The opera is told from the point of view of the title character, who endures both shame and sorrow, until she decides to take destiny into her own hands—leading to one of the most devastating and legendary final scenes in all of opera. The drama, accompanied by Puccini’s emotionally charged score, portrays the dangers of misguided love and a brave pursuit of a better life.

Puccini’s score suggests the composer’s intent to craft a dramatic and musical synthesis, and the success of this opera is always driven by the performer singing Butterfly -one of the most demanding roles in the soprano repertory. Not only is Butterfly constantly present onstage – she must express an astounding array of emotions to realize the singular character development achieved in the drama. The vocal abilities needed to convey this complex character are like no other in opera.

This fully-staged production from Teatro Lirico D’Europa, performs with 30-piece orchestra and English supertitles.

With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever. The magic of Barrie’s classic tale springs spectacularly to life in this heartwarming theatrical event.
