Daniel Johnston’s live album Chicago 2017 Streaming Now

The last album recorded by the late, great singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston was released Monday on streaming services.

Johnston’s Chicago 2017 includes new arrangements of 14 Johnston originals and one Beatles cover. Nine tracks are performed live from Chicago’s Vic Theater backed by Tweedy (the band comprised of Jeff and Spencer Tweedy, James Elkington, Darin Gray and Liam Kazar) and five songs were pulled from the previous day’s session at The Loft.

All profits from this release will be donated to the Johnston family’s “Hi How Are You” Foundation for the study and treatment of mental illness and addiction recovery.

Johnston, who was born in California but grew up in New Cumberland, W.Va., recorded 18 solo albums and gained international status when Kurt Cobain wore a T-shirt of Johnston’s 1983 album, “Hi, How Are You?” for the photo shoot for a Nirvana album. Johnston’s honest and catchy pop songs gained a legion of cult fans and such artists as Flaming Lips, Beck and Tom Waits covered his songs on a 2004 tribute album.

His life-long battle with mental illness and life story was captured in the 2006 award-winning documentary, “The Devil and Danial Johnston,” and in the 2016 Scott McClanahan graphic novel, “The Incantations of Daniel Johnston.”

Johnston died at the age of 58 of a heart attack in September 2019.  Here’s the live track, “Worried Shoes,” off of the Chicago 2017 recording.

“There is and was only one Daniel and to be able to work with him and help present his music was a huge honor for me and the band, one for which we are all very thankful,” stated Wilco founder Jeff Tweedy, whose band Tweedy backed Johnston on his final tour and on this new album of that tour.

Daniel Johnston’s Chicago 2017 is now available on streaming services.
